Laboratories used for scientific research take many forms because of the differing requirements of specialists in the various fields of science and engineering. A\u00a0<\/span>physics<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>laboratory might contain a\u00a0<\/span>particle accelerator<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>vacuum chamber<\/a>, while a\u00a0<\/span>metallurgy<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>laboratory could have apparatus for\u00a0<\/span>casting<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>orrefining<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>metals or for testing their\u00a0<\/span>strength<\/a>. A\u00a0<\/span>chemist<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>orbiologist<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>might use a\u00a0<\/span>wet laboratory<\/a>, while a\u00a0<\/span>psychologist’s<\/a>laboratory might be a room with one-way mirrors and hidden cameras in which to observe behavior. In some laboratories, such as those commonly used by\u00a0<\/span>computer scientists<\/a>,computers<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(sometimes\u00a0<\/span>supercomputers<\/a>) are used for eithersimulations<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>or the\u00a0<\/span>analysis<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>data<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>collected elsewhere. Scientists in other fields will use still other types of laboratories.\u00a0<\/span>Engineers<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>use laboratories as well to design, build, and test technological devices.<\/p>\n

Scientific laboratories can be found in\u00a0<\/span>schools<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>universities<\/a>, in\u00a0<\/span>industry<\/a>, in\u00a0<\/span>government<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>military<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>facilities, and even aboard\u00a0<\/span>ships<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>spacecraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
